UCLA Faculty Position in "Climate Change": An Infomercial

I doubt that this blog will ever rival the Job Openings for Economists or the SSRN Job Announcements but I thought that it couldn't hurt to reveal some "insider" information. UCLA has posted a great job for a social scientist who works on "climate change" issues. Now, you might ask what exactly are we looking for? Should we just hire Al Gore? Or his son, who already lives in LA?

Well, as a member of the search committee --- I can say with a straight face that I seek to hire a researcher/teacher with genuine interests and knowledge about the social science behind climate change mitigation and adaptation. Here is the job ad.

UCLA Faculty Position on Climate Change

A Mitigation expert could;

1. study strategies to reduce transportation emissions
2. reduce residential and commercial emissions
3. reduce industrial emissions
4. reduce power plant emissions
5. international treaties (i.e Post-Kyoto) to encourage the adoption of incentives to actually address climate change.
6. strategies in the developed world versus the developing world
7. Do research on how to encourage green R&D to reduce co2 emissions/GNP


An adaptation expert could

1. study what geographical areas are at greatest risk from climate change
2. investigate what investments different areas are and are not making (think of New Orleans) to minimize the impact of climate change induced shocks
3. think about how the World Bank and other international organizations can help poorer nations adapt.

This is not an exhaustive list. There is a growing group of social science researchers at UCLA examining environmental issues. We hold positions at the Public Policy Department, Urban Planning Department, the Law School, Business School, the School of Public Health and the Institute of the Environment.
